Its odd that there should be a debate about the population of Orleans Parish. The Mayor says it is 230,000-250,000 people. The state says it is 187,000. This is in October 2006. Demographer Eliot Stonecipher says we should count more often (duh? it's his business). Looking back, counts have been more accurate for at least 150 years.

The chart to the left from the Unified New Orleans Plan, Congress II report,  shows that the population of New Orleans dropped to 130,000 immediately after the storm. Its hard to believe that many people stayed behind. Then within two weeks after the storm the evacuation was completed. What was the population then, before people started to trickle back?
