The streetcar is a widely recognized symbol of New Orleans. Now operated by the Regional Transit Authority, streetcars and buses get people around in New Orleans when they choose not to use a car.

The broader Metropolitan Transportation Plan for the New Orleans Urbanized Area is maintained by the Regional Planning Commission. The plan is one of eight in the State of Louisiana that knits together the mesh of federal, state and parish requirements, leaders and financing that contribute to the construction and maintenance of our highways, bridges and public transit. The RPC members include Orleans, Jefferson, St Tammany, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes. St. Charles, St. John and Tangipahoa are not members.
