Education is not just Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. A major component, unmet in our public schools, has
to do with providing service to the community. So many venues for
service exist.
One service that would be strongly encouraged is tutoring. Tutoring
could also include a strong community out-reach provision, engaging
local citizens as module counsellors. Much like the scouts use local
parents as merit badge counsellors and universities use their alums in
recruitment, the schools using the standard modules could
certify volunteer tutors for the modules. (Yeah, no sex offenders, please)
Other service programs would engage students in community
housing, hunger, crime prevention and holiday programs. In Switzerland,
students participated in construction and support of
the Heidi trail. New Orleans will have Habitat for Humanity,
Healthcare, Environmental, Legislative, etc. opportunities for
years
to come.
Completion of a minimum service requirement would be required for
graduation. Graduation with honors would require a greater commitment
to service just like it requires a commitment to academics. Student who
receive free services like meals, transportation, child care and
tuition assistance should be able to pay with additional public service
hours.
