It’s really beginning to set in. This city is moving towards a different future. The sooner New Orleans accepts this as fact, the better the recovery will be.
New Orleans remains cruel and uncommitted. Planners come and
go. Ideas form, swirl and dissipate. The central vision, which could rally the
city towards its future, remains elusive, mired in controversy and distrust.
Racism is the persistant backdrop.
Leadership is focused on the details. No one has climbed the
tallest tree, taken a good look around and shouted back to New Orleans "Wrong Forest!" Kudos to Dr.
Stephen Covey, Dr. Blakely where are you?
Embedded in this sea of distrust you'll find a few
committed folks trying against all odds to make a difference. FEMA is trying
but remains lost in its bureaucracy. If the locals can't manage their way out
of a paper bag, they can’t expect much help from FEMA. The Corps of Engineers
has a new commander and will try harder to fight the last flood. Civic activists snipe
viciously and bayonet the wounded. It’s like a dysfunctional family with lots
money.
