The original city. Founded by Bienville in 1718. Bounded by Canal, Rampart, Esplanade and the river. As you might imagine the quarter is on the highest land in the area and it did not flood postK.

The bars in the French Quarter were some of the first businesses back after the storm. Some never closed. With a large and liquid clientel of FEMA and other responders housed in hotels the bars had a ready market. Within two weeks, the midnight curfew was cramping their style. Politicians were petitioned without result and a protest was organized. The city backed down and extended the curfew to 2am. The curfew was ended in most of the city on December 23, 2005.

Jackson Square with the St. Louis Cathedral in the background pictured here didn't flood and hosted President Bush for his September 15, 2005 speech from New Orleans.
