Katrina wiped out the St Charles street car line overhead electrical facilities, a big substation full of DC power rectifiers and flood waters damaged vehicles used along the riverfront and on Canal Street. The RTA reestablished service along Canal Street first using the old green streetcars from the St. Charles line. The green cars had remained safely in their barn on Willow Street which was just outside the flooding. A bus now ran St. Charles Avenue until the streetcars returned in December 2007. Service will resume along Carrollton Avenue in 2008.

New Orleans and Jefferson operate their own transit systems even though New Orleans calls its system New Orleans Regional Transit Authority. A truly regional transit authority remains an elusive dream. The ULI plan envisioned such a transit system.
