You've found your way to "The Parish". Home of the Yats. St. Bernard is heavily industrialized with petrochem, sugar, and other industry. It houses the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans which concluded the reprise to the US Revolution more commonly called the War of 1812.

Close knit, multi generation, working class neighboorhoods characterized this area. New development of surburban style homes created a few upscale neighboorhoods. Some isolated areas offered a form of coastal, super-rural living unmatched anywhere in the area.

All of this  was heavily damaged by Katrina. Near universal flooding to the eaves has left the parish a mess. Extreme difficulty in restoring flood protection is likely to impede repopulation of the area. It is chock full of white FEMA trailers suggesting someone is trying. Many residents have moved to the Northshore ( now being called "St. Tamma-nard" Parish )  to reestablish their lives and communites.
