The old New Orleans red-light district along Basin Street (just outside the French Quarter) was closed in 1917 upon objections by the U.S. Navy. You should not go there now unless you plan to visit the Iberville Public Housing Project or St. Louis Cemetery #1. The cemetery is quite an attraction but can be dangerous so go in a group; the project is an eyesore and can be dangerous too.

The historical marker for this attraction:
Created 1897 and closed 1917, New Orleans’ famous legalized redlight district was in this area. Among the many great jazz musicians on the scene here were King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Tony Jackson and Jimmie Noone.

People live in the Iberville. Read about public housing in New Orleans for more details.
