Both spans took major hits from high waters during Katrina. Roadways
were lifted off their foundations by the storm. The
overpasses were undamaged. Boh Brothers construction won the approval
of the populace and a $1.3 million bonus for reopening the Eastern span
17 days ahead of schedule. The other span will be ready around the
first of the year.
There is now talk of additional 3 lane spans built a bit higher to avoid a repeat performance.
Suprisingly the old US-11 bridge and the railroad bridge just to the
west of the
Twin Spans were not seriously damaged. The US-11 bridge briefly resumed
it role after the storm providing the primary access to Slidell.
