This municipal aquarium at the foot of Canal Street was not flooded by
the storm but loss of power meant the temperature spiked killing many
of the fish. The penguins were saved and evacuated to penguin shelters.
Rumors that FEMA awarded $2,000 to each penguin are not true. However
two pairs are now living in a FEMA trailer park in Baker, Louisiana and
41 more are in hotels across the region. Ron Forman, Director of the
Audubon Institute says all the penguins have been accounted for and are
well. The FBI denied allegations that they are investigating $61,000
allegedly paid to penguins in September 2005. Judge Elloie pardoned
several penguins for violent crimes against phish when Kimberly W.
Butler was unable to produce the evidence. Butler claimed the phish
were stolen by Ray Nagin in an attempt to discredit her office.
The penguins returned to the Aquarium of the Americas on May 22, 2006.
There was significant fanfare when the penguins landed at
Armstrong Airport (in a plane, penguins can't fly). Many of the fish
have been replaced and the Aquarium officially reopens this weekend.
