Flooded during the storm, this hospital was in danger of being shutdown before the storm. It has now been condemned and will not reopen. Charity was the primary site for providing indigent care in New Orleans and part of the Louisiana public healthcare system that has been under fire for some time. Now regular hospitals are being swamped with non-paying indigent care requests and are feeling the financial stress.

Charity also provided the top Level 1 trauma center in the region and some thought in the nation. The doctors have dispersed and loss of the Trauma Center is sorely felt in the city.

Louisiana's all embracing safety-net health care system consistes of the LSU Health Sciences Center's Health Care Services Division and the nine medical centers which fall under its banner. Charity and University Hospitals were the two New Orleans medical centers included in this system.
