Open, main building was demolished before the storm and construction of
mixed income residential community in its place continues.
Nestled in the curve of the westbank approaches to the Crescent City
Connection you'll find the HANO (HUD) operated Fischer Housing Project.
Like other high density public housing projects in the metro area this
project became a hotbed of criminal activity. Murder and drugs led the
way. Residents from this area were initially unaffected by Katrina
until they were evacuated and the project sealed. Fischer's impact on Algiers Point is hard to estimate.
The main six story building was imploded earlier in the Summer of 2005.

and houses in the space. This would be consistent with recent direction
to replace high density public housing with mixed use housing including
some individually owned units with Section 8 and rental housing.
