Arriving starving, penniless and diseased, many settled within a few blocks of the dock. Jobs were easy to come by in this busy port and life was rough.
High and dry, this land is an important part of the "Sliver by the River." This neighborhood unlike almost any other in the city contains a racial mix that matches the proportions across the city as a whole. It is 70% black, 26% white, 4% other.
