Two hundred fifty intersections restored at a cost of $16 million in Orleans. Eighteen months after the storm, 29 Orleans intersections are still out of service and a few that have been repaired have failed again. Many seem to be routinely failing into the flashing red in both directions mode. A few others seem to have been permanently removed.
Traffic lights and street lights were disrupted and destroyed across the entire city. Many remained out of service for months.
Police erected temporary 4 way stop signs at the busiest intersections.
It worked pretty well as long as the traffic was light. The populated
areas were fixed within a few weeks.
Some traffic lights have now been removed suggesting the temporary fix will be in place for a while. Street lights are out too.
A fireman died 12/17/2005 when his fire truck overturned in NO East. They
were responding to an emergency and ran into trouble with an 18 wheeler
and a van at one of the traffic non-lights.
Authorities claim its hard to get parts and service given the incredible demand. I find it hard to believe that nationwide and even worldwide there are no traffic lights available.
