Just down river (east) of the French Quarter the Faugbourg Marigny was populated first after the Haitian Revolution in 1809. The Marigny has become an extension of the French Quarter residential and entertainment district.  Clubs like Snug Harbor and restaurants including the Praline Connection find a French Quarter charm and bustle in the neighborhood. There is also the off chance that you might find a parking space.

Located on high ground, it was not flooded by Katrina.
