The Urban Land Institute recognized that some parts of the city flooded
more than others. There were even some parts that didn't flood at all.
They seem to think we ought to move back into the undamaged parts right
away and be cautious with the rest. They went so far as to identify
some parts of the city that we shouldn't repopulate at all but should
reserve for flood control and greenspace.
Pretty brilliant stuff for a big time consulting group don't you think.
Every little bit of reasonable thought helps. If you'd like to know
what they actually said read the press release linked below and then
review the PowerPoint presentation. It's a much more positive picture
than the press allows. It does point to a smaller smarter city in the
near term future, but a city with a future nevertheless.
Many politicians and others with interests vested in the past will view this vision as a threat.
