Levee boards are taxing authorities that provide local input and resouces (primarily 30% matching funds)  for the construction and maintenance of levees that protect an area from flooding. Many of the boards have other functions as well including airports, police, and road construction.

With 20 boards each consisting of 5-20 members appointed by the Governor and excercising considerable spending authority these have become choice political patronage opportunities.

  • 2006 Consolidation : The second special legislative session in 2006 and an overwhelming victory in September's general election make Constitutional Amendment #3 the law.
