Congress passed the
Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act
(CWPPRA) in 1990.
It funds wetland enhancement projects nationwide,
designating approximately $50 million annually for work in Louisiana. The
USGS Site contains a complete description of CWPPRA.
A couple of the most interesting of these projects are efforts to
redirect a portion of the river's flow back into the marshes. These so
called freshwater diversion projects are showing great promise in
reviving target wetland areas. Garyville, Donaldsonville (200,000 cfs), Violet, Myrtle Grove diversions are under consideration.
