The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, Inc. (LOOP) is America's first and only deepwater port providing tanker offloading and temporary storage services for crude oil
transported on some of the largest tankers in the world. Most tankers offloading at LOOP
are too large for U.S. inland ports.
The satellite image shows Port Fourchon, the land based terminal. The
Main Marine Terminal, pictured to the left, is about 20 miles offshore near the mooring
stations. Pipelines connect
this facility to the Clovelly Dome (salt cavern) storage facility near
Galliano. Interstate pipelines take the oil from there to refineries across the
nation.
