Before the May elections this group seemed headed toward becoming the
"new" School Board. They were
thrashing about, opposing the Mayor but not offering
alternatives. The elections changed four of the seven members
including one at-large. Now we have a career politician, three lawyers,
a diplomat, a teacher and a beauty queen. Four are black and three are
white so we'll get to see how our leadership handles race issues.
Nagin's go-to guy, Eddie Sapir, was term
limited so that dynamic also has to change. Nagin is making noises that
Hedge-Morell might become his floor leader. Redistricting will probably
become an issue before the next election.
Oliver Thomas was reelected in the primary (he's may run for Congress ) Arnie Fielkow replaces Eddie Sapir at large (Sapir was Nagin's go to guy so the dynamics are in flux)
District A - Lakeview/Carrollton (the west) - Shelly Midura replaces Jay Batt District B - CBD to Audubon, Mid-City - Stacey Head replaced Rene Gill Pratt
District C - Algiers/French Quarter- James Carter replaced Jackie Clarkson District D - Gentilly, Desire, Dillard, Bywater, UNO -Cynthia Hedge-Morell - reelected from unpopulated district District E -New Orleans East - Cynthia Willard-Lewis - reelected from unpopulated district
