The Governor, our esteemed Senators Vitter and Landrieu, Rep Wm
Jefferson and Oliver Thomas led a group of 50 of our leaders on a fact
finding tour of the Netherlands this week. I am left speechless.
The Netherlands has recovered from 1953 winter storm induced North Sea
flooding. They've made flood control a national priority, then
engineered and built some pretty amazing structures. What our politicians hope to learn is beyond me.
Perhaps they'll benefit from being together for a few days with minimal distractions while focused on flood control.
What they missed includes a Presidential visit, Mitch Landrieu and Rep
Baker hosted the President, and the opportunity to add their support to
the BNOB proposal. The Congress is set to go into session and critical
issues include making sure the $3.1 billion for flood control proposed
by the President is appropriated and spent, getting the Baker bill
through and getting a share of oil and gas severance. A special
Legislative session starts in three weeks to consider the levee boards.
