Louisiana's coastal wetlands can be best considered in terms of the
coastal basin in which they are found. Around New Orleans you'll find
the Ponchartrain Basin, Barataria Basin, Breton Sound Basin, Delta
Basin, and the Terrebonne Basin. Each was formed by different
mechanisms at different times and is threatened in unique ways. However
in each case the overriding concern is the effect of the river levees
and the damage from lack of fresh water and sedimentation. Currently the Barataria basin is losing land at the fastest rate.
The
LaCoast website provided
the map and does an excellent job describing the wetlands and the
projects being conducted under the Breaux Act to save them.
