Jim Letten is the current Federal Attorney. In a recent radio interview he allowed reference to the interviewer's assertion that judges retaliate against other in the criminal justice system to go  unchallenged. Letten was not one fo the eight Federal Attorneys fired in 2006.

Special Agent In Charge, James Bernazzani of the FBI noted that post-K New Orleans is considerably safer than it was before. He cited a murder rate that had dropped from 50 per 100k of population to 7.8 per 100k. He failed to comment on the increased murder rate in Jefferson which the newspaper had reported as a growing crisis. He also failed to mention the activities of expatriates in Houston, Memphis and Atlanta. He expressed optimism that there was no current gang activity and steps were being taken to make sure it did not re-emerge.

A citizens group that monitors and tries to eradicate graffiti supported this view noting that although there is some gang sign in town, there is far less than pre-K.

As things began to spiral out of control in mid 2006 and the murder rate jumped back up to preK levels and beyond, Alberto Gonzales visited and pledged more support to the Federal Attorney's office. After his congressional appearance in April 2007 it might be interesting to see if he recalls that pledge.
