Two of the four storage caverns are in Louisiana.
  • Bryan Mound - located near Freeport, Texas. Has a capacity of 226 million barrels (36,000,000 m³).
  • Big Hill - located near Winnie, Texas. Has a capacity of 160 million barrels (25,000,000 m³).
  • West Hackberry - located near Lake Charles, Louisiana. Has a capacity of 219 million barrels (35,000,000 m³).
  • Bayou Choctaw - located near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Has a capacity of 72 million barrels (11,000,000 m³).
Given that 2006 imports are running at 3.2 billion barrels per year, the SPR could provide 77 days of imports. Actually its quite a bit better than that since 33% of all imports come from Canada and Mexco, sources which are not likely to be interrupted. Only 19% of US imports come from the Middle East.

Another way to look at US Consumption is by source:
  • 40% domestic production
  • 11% Canada
  • 10% Mexico
  • 8% Saudi
  • 6% Venezuela
  • 25% Other
We import about 10 million barrels of oil per day to the United States. How long can we send $700 million per day or $255 billion per year (2% of our GDP)  to our trading partners without consequences.

In 2011 The SPR is full with 726 million barrels socked away against a rainy day. One billion barrels is the target and a new expansion site is being scouted. At $100 per bbl we are looking at a $100 billion resource. Nice.
