Expelled from Nova Scotia in the 1760's by the British, these French
descendants settled in south Louisiana mostly west of New Orleans in
the area now known as Acadiana (all of southwest Louisiana).
Not New Orleanians at all, the Cajuns are mostly country folks who live in
the surrounding parishes particularly Terrebonne and Lafourche. The term "coonass" is a controversial and occasionally offensive label applied to Cajuns by themselves and others.
