Getting back to school has become an interesting choice. Fifty seven public (57) elementary, middle and high schools will open in Orleans next year in one of three management formats:
  • 5 Local District (the old NOPS retains five of its best schools)
  • 18 Recovery District (state run)
  • 34 Charter (various formats)
Five schools are being operated by the New Orleans Public Schools (the old school board). Two of these will operate on the McMain Campus. These were the highest performing schools in the district. NOPS is continuing to run an unusual format with its 2 elementary schools (K-6)  and 3 unified high schools (7-12)

The lower performing schools were taken over by the State Recovery District. The recovery district will run 11 elementary (K-8) and 7 High Schools (9-12).

Thirty-four charters have been approved. 27 elementary schools (K-8) and 7 High Schools (9-12) will be operated by charter districts. Several of the charters were preexisting. Most are new.

Parents and students have been told they can go to any school and will be provided transportation if they live more than a mile from their school.
