Connected Bayou St. John to the French Quarter at Basin Street which was built as a turning basin for shipping in the canal. Built in 1794.  Part of a plan to connect the river to the lake.  Taken out of shipping service in 1927 it was filled in in 1938. A few remnants of the canal still used as drainage canals. It was not a factor in Katrina.
