Making groceries in New Orleans between 1946 and 1997 often meant meant going to Schwegmann's. Springing out of the Bywater and ultimately growing to 18 stores with locations across the city this mini-chain rose and fell with the fortunes of the city.

Founded by John G. Schwegmann and his two brothers in 1946 the family owned grocery store became a supermarket. Innovations included size (the stores were all huge), self-service (you walked around with a basket), and a parking lot on the roof of one store where street parking was tight.

Several of the skeletons from this sold out and defunct chain continue to grace (?) the city. I've used the abandoned parking lot of one as a safe place to give each of my children their first driving lesson.
