Furcy Verret dug a canal in 1814 to drain the plantation owned jointly by him and Madame Duverje. This waterway was for many years a feature
of the vicinity. It connected with the Mississippi by locks and was
much used by smugglers and fishermen coming up from the Barataria
region to go to New Orleans. Among the former were Lafitte, Dominique
You and others of the so-called "pirates
"
of Barataria, who used the canal as a channel of communication between
their settlements at Grand Terre, Chenière Caminada and Barataria.
