In 1842 Daniel Holmes opened his first store. In 1989 D.H.Holmes Ltd. was acquired by Dillard's. For 147 years "Holmeses" offered an exemplary shopping experience in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
John Chase and Shep Plesants authored a 1967 cartoon style book commemorating the 125th anniversary of Holmes that encapsulates much of the experience that made New Orleans what it is. Written fifty years ago and published only two years after Hurricane Betsy racked the city, this book provides a pleasant anachronism. It contains an optimism that's hard to find today.
