Many of the worst ideas of the Democratic and Republican Parties find a home in William Jefferson's voting record.
Fiscally a Democrat, he creates and supports the entitlement philosophy and the idea that government ought to treat citizens differently based on their race. He panders to the African Americans he represents. He is a leading member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Personally conservative and intrusive into personal responsibility and choice, he supports Republican positions on abortion, marriage, medical reseach and the environment.
Although he voted to authorize the Iraq war and voted for the Patriot
Act, he has more recently voted against the Patriot Act Reauthorization
and the Military Commissions Act.
Jefferson refused to answer the National Political Awareness Test which would have given him a chance to explain his positions on the issues.
