Oak Street runs 16 blocks from Tulane University, across Carrollton Avenue and then turns into the River Road Jefferson Parish line just across the railroad tracks near the levee.
At Carrollton and Oak you'll find the end of the Oak Street Commercial District that stretches north towards Jefferson. A Whitney Bank, the Matodolorosa Catholic Church, a drug store, a medical clinic and the Nix Branch Library anchor the district at the intersection.
In the old days the drug store was a
Katz and Bestoff and just up the street you'd find the Woolworth's Five and Dime store and an old style hardware store. Just across the Jefferson line several gambling establishments operated until the 1950's. It was rumored that some buildings across the levee on the batture offered prostitution.
