Jaques-Imo's

In the style of  K-Paul's this restaurant is classified as Cajun. As their floor tiles proclaim, they've been operating since1996 in the 8300 block of Oak Street. This is part of a dynamic resurgent Carrollton neighborhood that was barely damaged by the storm and is fueled by Tulane University nine months out of each year. Friday nights are the busiest.

Carpetbagger steak, crusted gulf fish, paneed rabbit are all excellent. The menu is split into unchanging classics on the left, daily features on the right (or vice versa). Every meal is served with a salad and two sides. The side dishes are simple but good. Don't miss the eggplant appetizer or the fried green tomatoes with shrimp remolaude. Look for the oysters en brochette. As soon as you are seated a garlic cornbread muffin will get you into the right frame of mind.

It might be crowded, and if you don't arrive before 6 pm expect to wait. Casual dress, loose recommended, the portions are large. Consider appetizers and a single entree for two. That's the only way you'll ever get to find out if the desserts are good too.

The bar can fix a decent Martini. The wine list is limited. Relax and be happy. After you eat, the Maple Leaf music club is right next door. Check ahead to see who is featured.

  • Crabby Jack's : Jaques-Imo's casual lunchtime plate and poboy place. Great sauce on the special fish dishes. Duck poboys. You can go wrong but it takes work. As the signs posted around the dining room blatently imply....'be happy, or leave." Lotsa take out, go figure :: Continue reading...
