"At your momma's" is usually the best, but you might try one of these if "your momma don't live here no more."

Domilise's - uptown joint on Annunciation, if you savor the authenticity
Parran's Po-Boys on Vets is near the Second Serve Tennis shop...they'll restring your racquet while you enjoy a poboy
DiMartino's -  roast beef, Italian sausage and Swiss on the westbank
Chubby's on General Meyer has great fried seafood but unusual hours of operation
Parkway Bakery - Bayou St. John location
Casemento's oyster loaf is unique if you find yourself on Magazine, but not in the summer
Mothers - uses cabbage, near the river on Poydras is a favorite with tourists
Johnny's - lunch stop in the CBD in the shadow of One Shell Square
Parasol's in the Irish Channel (one block off Magazine Street at 2533 Constance) famous for St Paddys day celebrations
Russell's Short Stop on Transcontinental near Airline
Salvo's  - best oyster poor boy, Belle Chasse
Maspero's in the Quarter near Jax Brewery can be fun and touristy
Central Grocery on Decatur has a muffaletta if you like your sandwiches in the round
Radosta's just off Metairie Road offers a grilled shrimp poboy called the Joan Special
Bear's Metairie Rd location under the Causeway overpass has all the PoBoys

and amazingly a convenience store, Danny and Clyde's offers exceptional overstuffed poboys at locations in Metairie, Mandeville, Houma and Thibodaux. Brother's is in this hunt as well for best convenience store chow.

and about 5,000 other locations around the city. Comment if you love one.

(Subway and Quizno's have found their way into town but their sandwiches do not qualify as poor boys because the bread is all wrong. )

  • Best Roast Beef Po-Boy : April 2012 saw Brett Anderson of the Times Picayune pick his top roast beef po-boy. I'll share the results and observe that I don't agree with the methodology or the results. That is the nature of food. It's personal.

1 R&O in Bucktown wins with a sesame seeded Leidenheimer loaf.

2 Bear's in Covington takes silver with Leidenheimers. Covington is part of the metro area, but I doubt I'll be travelling there for a sandwich.

3 Chateau in a Marrero strip mall using Hi Do bread takes the bronze and is one of only two non Leidenheimer winners. I have discovered Hi Do bakery and agree it deserves more attention. This might just be the next Mackenzies.

OK, I haven't had even one of these so I can't tell you if they are good. You can count on me to correct this state of affairs over the next year.

4 Johnny's in the Quarter gets an honorable mention with Leidenheimer and is the highest rated choice a tourist might find. Of course the survey missed my number 1 choice over at Stanley on Jackson Square. I understand that a $16 po-boy might somehow be missing the point.

5 Mahony's using Leidenheimer finishes out of the money with the top Magazine Street entry.

6 Parasol's, the St. Patrick's Day favorite somehow makes the list as the top Irish Channel entrant.

7 Rocky and Carlos in Chalmette isn't even open, but the Picayune writer thinks its in the top ten because of its gravy.

8 St Rose in St Charles Parish is technically part of New Orleans metro, but a bit off the beaten path. Its best RB PB is found at the St. Rose Tavern and uses Leidenheimer bread..

9 Some love Sammy's salt, others don't. Eight out of ten pick Leidenheimer. Saltiness should be subtle and should not define a great Po-Boy.

10 Never heard of Southern Po-Boys near Ochsner. Research opportunity. Uses Dong Phuong bread. More research.

    What I didn't see included:
Mothers, the most famous po-boy in town
DiMartino's, a really good one if you skip the muffeletta bread.
