Also called Audubon, this area is dominated by Tulane and Loyola Universities and by Audubon Park. Beautiful tree lined streets and expensive homes surround the campuses and the park. This area is 86% white and had an average household income of $108,000 (more than double the city's average) in 2000.

Bounded by Lowerline to the west (Carrollton) and Jefferson to the east (Uptown). From the river to Claiborne Avenue there is much high ground, but  a few areas bordering Broadmoore are  in the city's central basin and subject to flooding.

Portions of the area to the east of the universities and on the lake side of St. Charles Avenue flooded badly with up to four feet of water. Audubon Park and all of the property between St. Charles and the river was high and dry.

Audubon Park contains the zoo. All of the animals remained in the zoo during the storm and were fine.

The telephone exchanges in New Orleans used to be associated with their neighborhoods mnemonically. The University neighborhood phone numbers all started with 86-xxxx. The 86 prefix matches the letter  UN on the phone dial and was commonly called "University."  So when someone would ask for your phone number you might answer "UNiversity  - 5555." In the late 1950's the phone numbers in the city were expanded to 7 digits and party lines generally abandoned. However most of the prefixes were retained until finally in the mid to late 1960's the prefix names were abandoned officially. The Public Library has more about the telephone exchanges on their Nutrias website.

When was the 504 area code introduced? As usual, Wikipedia has the scoop on the North American Numbering Plan, the standard for phone numbers.
However no specific answers about 504.
