Jordan continues to distinguish himself. On Monday August 28, 2006 he
blew up and walked out of an interview aired on ABC Nightline. Calling
the reporter's questions "stupid" he vowed never to be interviewed by
Brian Ross again. Ross had asked whether Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales' comment that "You
need to have an effective police department, you need to
have the courts operating effectively, you need to have a
local prosecutor who is doing his job." was directed toward Jordan.
In
follow up interviews Jordan claimed his office has performed well
gaining 21 convictions in 30 trials. Perhaps he thinks this is good
performance. Nation wide conviction rates are in the high 90% range.
The DA gets to pick the trials he will pursue.
Under continuing pressure he fired back in October 2006 with a
letter to the editor of the Times Picayune
claiming his office is not lethargic. Specifically he claims to accept
70% of cases referred by the police and then win 50-60% of the cases
that come to trial. He wrote that his office has reduced the backlog
of cases from over 6,000 in May to under 3,000 today.
In April 2007 he appeared before a
Congressional Investigation into crime in New Orleans. When confronted
with facts like the national murder rate and his own prosecution rate
(11% of arrests) he was dumbfounded.
Jordan resigned on October 30, 2007. Keva Landrum-Johnson a 34 year old senior prosecutor in the office was named interim DA. The govrenor will call a special election to fill the position fro the remiander of Jordan's term.
