June 2008 is month 34 since Katrina.
Hurricane season starts again. T.D. Arthur wets the Yucatan. It became a tropical storm briefly so it got a name. Jim
Letten indicted nine more Jeffersons including 4th District assessor
Betty Jefferson this month. Records show that between 1994 and 2006,
the state of Louisiana
contributed at least $5.5 million to three Jefferson controlled
non-profits including Care
Unlimited, Orleans Metropolitan Housing and Central City Adult
Education. The
indictment says over $700,000 was diverted to family members. Motions
continued in Bill Jefferson's trial with a federal Judge refusing to
throw out most of the charges.
Vouchers
passed the legislature in Louisiana. Starting in the Fall of 2008,
first through third grade students can receive vouchers for private
school tuition of up to $6,300, if their parents earn $53,000 per year
or less. The proposal passed by huge margins, 96-2 in the House
indicating widespread support. Critics claim vouchers will ruin both
the public and private schools. Vouchers make good financial sense
since the state is currently paying more than $6,300 per student in
public and charter schools. This figure is consistent with private
school tuition around town, with only the most elite schools charging
significantly more. The details and execution will determine if this
program succeeds. Ultimately it could result in a fully privatized
school system.
