The sixtieth month since Katrina began before sunrise on July 29, 2010 and will end on the 5th Anniversary of landfall on August 29th.

It is hot. NOAA just reported that the past decade ending in 2009 was the hottest ever. Global warming skeptics scoffed. Tropical weather remains ominously quiet as el Nino fades.

The BP Macondo well remains under control but has not yet been permanently killed. Efforts to achieve "static kill" and then "bottom kill" will come in August. A delay reported on July 29 due to debris in a relief well could impact the schedule. Then another delay. Static kill sealed the top of the well but raised questions about pressure during bottom kill. BP and Thad Allen decided to install a new blowout preventer (using the one from the second relief well) before proceeding.

A little disturbance on August 11th, not even able to sustain itself as TD#5 cleared the Gulf of BP. Amazingly this little storm circled over Georgia then re-entered the Gulf and hit New Orleans again on August 17 just for emphasis. It was just a couple of thunderstorms. We enjoyed the cooler weather for a few days. Wind shear over the Gulf remains intense and seems to be impeding tropical intensification.

August 12 sees the Saints in Foxboro a weak preseason effort caused the media to boo. The home opener against the Texans on the 21st ought to be more exciting.
