this month was intentionally left blank
nothing happened

Well, that's only partially true, but there were a lot of non-events some of which are recorded here:

The River started to subside and the destruction of the Atchafalaya basin was postponed for the foreseeable future. Apparently the ground was so dry it absorbed all the water and the flooding did not happen.

Drought and heat took over the southwest. The lack of rainfall took its toll. New Orleans has been suffering a drought with rainfall below norms. June is typically the wettest month in the city with average of 6.83 inches of rain. We didn't get much.

The NFL lockout continued. No training camps or practices were held. The NBA decided this was a good idea and started a lockout of their own.

The Congress did nothing. Unable to pass any legislation or even muster a good debate they decided to block recess appointments. Obama was so upset he compared the Congress to his daughter, Maliea, noting that she does her homework before it is due. Of course she didn't do any homework in June. School is out. The Supreme Court adjourned until October.

No jobs were created and unemployment rose. Wall Street seemed to like this so the stock market went up too. Greece seeing the enthusiasm for doing nothing decided to reduce the payments to their seniors and poor to balance their budget. Wall Street really liked this.

The entire state of Minnesota decided to shut down until further notice. Technically this did not take place until July 1, but we'll count it anyway.

The city, in a burst of late May energy, dug up half of Holiday drive from McArthur to Gen Meyer then placed cones and left it that way for the month of June. Who has that traffic cone contract with the city?

The Corps of Engineers achieved their deadlines for 100 year protection of the city by June 1, 2011. Having finished work they threw a party. A few  temporary structures are still in place at key locations and follow up work will be needed. Nothing doing yet on Category 5 protection and very little on coastal restoration. Beyond this, as the population has moved to the north shore,  nothing has been done there to prevent flooding. Talk about fighting the last war!
