  • Po Boy sandwiches must not be missed. DiMartino's roast beef, burger or italian sausage poboy with shrimp potato salad and a soda are a family favorite. In Old Metairie try Radosta's, or Bear's on Vets its Parran's, on the Bayou go to Parkway, Crabby Jack's near Ochsner has more range. Go to Bozo's   Mr. Ed's Oyster Bar and Fish House if you find yourself deep in Metairie. Mother's has the fame but there are better even if you are stuck in the CBD.
  • Drago's grilled oysters are unforgettable but if you really like oysters on the half shell go to Felix and stand at the bar (absolutely nothing else at Felix is palatable and don't sit down, if you must sit go across the street to Acme).
  • Go to one of the Great Restaurants like Antoines, Brennans, Commanders, Galatoire's, or even August (Besh) there are plenty of these and they are all fantastic. Sunday brunch includes music.
  • Try the Duck Tchopitoulas at Tommy's or walk down the block to Emeril's if your budget permits. Stop in at the Casino and win your ticket home.
  • Sushi is great at Kyoto, Sapporo, Ninja, Zen and many more Rock'n Saki adds flare.
  • Fried seafood is everywhere but I like Harbor Seafood on Williams for their gumbo and tacky neighborhood ambiance. You might like Deanies (the largest portions), Acme (the most advertized) or Chubbies on GenMeyer (strangest hours). Even the convenience stores have good fried seafood sandwiches.
  • Boiled seafood is even better. A few places offer a broiled seafood platter ("unfried"). I like to order boiled shrimp by the pound and boiled crabs (whole crabs in their shells). Harbor Seafood is my favorite destination. Their Fisherman's Cove fish market sells in bulk and will ship, taking advantage of their proximity to the airport.
  • Italian food in New Orleans ranges from elegant to delicious. Irene's on St. Phillip is my current favorite Eleven79 is was great, but there are so many choices. 
  • Vietnamese food is good here now. If that is your choice try Cafe Minh or Nine Roses. I buy Kim Son a few times a year just for the grilled pork and vermicelli. Pho Tau Bay on Tulane Avenue is trying to cash in on the new medical district.
  • Fried chicken and red beans at Popeyes is easy and good and Cains has that sauce you can pickup as you leave town, but if you like this cuisine go to Dooky Chase. The really great old  chicken places like Jim's and Fitzgerald's are gone and closed forever. Mr Ed's and Da Wabbit (aka Cafe 615) are trying to fill the gap.
  • French food in New Orleans would seem to be a slam dunk. But the city is overwhelmed with its own New Orleans French which delicious but not exactly authentic. Cote Sud in the Riverbend is authentic, but cash only. N7 is a new entry for the brave at heart. Chateau duc Lac in Metairie just closed. Crepes Nanou on Magazine fills a niche.
