Sailboat racing was important to about 1,000 New Orleanians who
participated as captain or crew in local and regional regattas. Yacht
Clubs in the area included Southern (SYC burned to the ground after
Katrina), New Orleans own NOYC, South Shore Yacht Club, the virtual YC Corinthians now following the gypsy tradition, Tammany YC at Oak Harbor (flooded
to the rafters in Slidell), and Mandeville's Pontchartrain Yacht Club (PYC's new club is expected to be ready in December,
2006, expect delays).
For about two years now the best yacht clubs in the area are operating out of "double-wides" bringing all new meaning to the term trailer trash.
