In June 2009 the Corp of Engineers announced the $1B West Closure Complex to be built just as suggested by the BNOB Infrastructure team and 40 years of study on the westbank. Hooray.

Expected to be ready for the 2011 Hurricane Season we have only a small window to get through before this new structure significantly reduces risk for the 245,000 people and businesses on the westbank.

In addition to this project the westbank is to receive additional updates including frontings on the pumping stations and new backflow prevention valves and a complete rebuild of the area around the Belle Chasse tunnel under the Algiers Canal. This in addition to all the work on the Harvey Canal should significantly enhance the chance of the westbank to ride out a 100 year storm without massive flooding.
