Intercoastal Waterway

Two huge breaks in the Intercoastal Waterway levee at Michoud were documented by utility personnel riding out the storm from the relatively safety of the Michoud Generating Station. Water broke through the North and South levees near the junction with the MRGO. The northern breach can be seen in this picture and viewed on a home video that will knock your socks off.

This spot is the "mouth of the funnel" and sustained the greatest dynamic pressure of any spot in New Orleans. The pressure induced surge, plus strong winds from the East and North were just too much. The levees couldn't handle it. Protecting this area is probably the most difficult challenge for the future of New Orleans.

The northern breaches flooded New Orleans East while the southern ones added to St Bernard Parishes woes.
