Issue focused blogs have emerged as a new media source. Try a few of the New Orleans flavored entries got a boost from Chris Rose on April 16, 2008:

Political blogs were first. Most want to help their candidates get elected. Differing from but similar to conventional websites, political blogs are dominated by the latests news and offer readers the chance to comment, even post entries.

Conservative, progressive, liberal, radical, all points of view have a place in the blogosphere. Other issue focused blogs have emerged as well. Metroblogging limits the focus to a particular city. New Orleans has many. Of course there are many Katrina blogs. Now there are even special purpose blogs doing such things as tracking the Corps of Engineers progress.

Scoop Software provides popular and innovative blog software offering a "diaries" approach whereby many contributors can personal diaries post to the website. Diaries are read by others and recommended. The software displays most current diaries, most recommended, allows searching by Tags (meta data keywords attached to diaries), and lets editors move diaries to the main page if they see fit.

Ads, subscriptions, and contributions make the most popular blogs financially viable.
