Focused civic activism is at an all time high. Organizations are cropping up focused on issues raised by the storm.

Levees.org is the website for a group dedicated to recognizing and fixing the responsibility for the levee failures on the United States Army Corps of Engineers and petitioning the federal government for redress in the form of reconstruction money, cat 5 levees, and wetland restoration. Levees.org also adds a bit of merchandising to their activism with online tee shirt sales.

This group got a boost from the Times Picayune when an op ed piece by Lolis Eric Elie in 2006 recognized and recommended the web site.

In 2007 Levees.org has been petitioning Congress for an independent bipartisan investigation into the failure of the levees. They contend letting the Corps investigate itself is not advisable. Other reviews already conducted by the likes of the ASCE and the continuing investigation by Professor Bob Bea of Berkeley supports the need for reform of the Corps before the next predicted, preventable engineering catastrophe hits our country.
