After the storm civic activism reached an all time high. Whether it was enough to make a real difference is the question.
Groups gutting houses on spring break are the real
heroes. These young men and women provide service. Not money, not talk,
they put their whole beings into service. Many will tell you they take
away experiences that change their lives. People who act with love towards others may ultimately be the only salvation of the human race.
I was thrilled when the story emerged in 2006 that a young man from Boston found $15,000 in cash in the wall of a
9'th Ward house he was gutting. His pleasure in returning this money to
its owner will stay with him his entire life.
Deep into 2007 people are still coming to New Orleans. Summer vacation saw groups from all over the country in New Orleans help with reconstruction. Habitat for Humanity is a quiet group of heroes.
