Orleans has twelve elected criminal court judges and a magistrate who sets bail. Civil District Court has twenty-nine more judges in CDC, Ad Hoc and something called First City Court and Second City Court (Westbank). Traffic court and juvenile court have more. Each court has its own system of clerks and sheriffs. Jefferson Parish has eighteen judges in its combined civil and criminal court system. The surrounding parishes have their own systems as well.

The La. State Supreme Court provides an oversight of the elected judiciary and has the power to censure, suspend or remove judges. The Louisiana Fourth Circuit Appeals Court serves New Orleans as well.

If that's not enough to give you that bloated feeling, there is also the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana with its 24 judges and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

  • I find it really hard to vote for the Judge positions because I don't know anything about these people. I don't know the buisness they are in. I can't find records of their performance.  Then the ones that get elected just leave me scratching my head as to what qualifications they bring to the bench. When I have served jury duty the judges I see are businesslike (I think it was Marullo and Parker I saw in action). Then when I read the MCC reports on Judicial performance I see that they are not doing very well.
