Originally Antoine Michoud's land the vast 32,000 acre tract was sold for $40 million to New Orleans East in 1955, subdivided and developed.
New Orleans East was flooded by Katrina to the rafters by multiple sources.
Rebuilding in this area is one of the biggest question marks in the
reconstruction of the city.
- One of the most recently populated areas it also suffers more subsidence than other areas as the ground dries.
- Surrounded by water on three sides the east has historically been a buffer area for the city.
- Nearly 95% African American, this area of the Ninth Ward could be counted on to deliver its votes for the political machines
- Site of the Eastover upscale development, Six Flags amusement park (closed will not reopen),
NASA's Michoud assembly facility, Folgers Coffee and much more this
area had great economic potential.
- Fading glory, the Lake Forest Plaza shopping center had pretty
much failed prior to the storm. Originally envisioned in the 1970's as
an upscale shopping center anchoring a vibrant growth area, the center
struggled with declining economic conditions and crime.
- Joe Brown Park included swimming, a planetarium and a wildlife walk (lots of snakes).
