What would it cost to produce the equivalent of 1,750 two hour movies.
Movies that would have to be captivating, educational and interesting.
At $30 million
for each 2 hour video (the price of a feature Hollywood movie including
screenwriters, producers, directors, studios, performers, soundtracks, editing, stunts, CGI graphics, everything first
class) we are talking about between $50-60 billion dollars. That is a
chunk of change and would take a national commitment to the program.
For another $10 billion we could create all the software the schools
would ever need. As a side effect we'd get a national database that
shows exactly how well students are doing across the country. It would
be updated in real time and would replace the thousands of piecemeal
systems now in place.
Under $1 billion more would get the process rolling for planning and a
few pilot projects. The schools have already made the commitment to
installing computers, TV's and internet access, now lets get some real
value out of this technological edge.
Say $75 billion for the whole she-bang spent over a period of ten years
and then $3 billion per year ongoing expense for module additions,
replacements
and upgrades. We'll still need just as many teachers, schools and
outside enrichment activities, we'll just get a lot more value for the
time and effort spent on academics.
Compare that to $350
billion per year being spent on a program that is failing to achieve
its goals. Let's get started.
