Not really a hamburger town we still love 'em. Can you name the burger in this image? Is the hamburger poboy a real hamburger? Try one at Liuzza's if you have any doubts.

  • Port of Call on Esplanade still makes a living off burgers ( this IS where you'd find Jimmy Buffett eating even though his Margaritaville over on Decatur also serves burgers)
  • The Fab 5 were  reported in Lagniappe in 2011. Cowbell, Juicy Lucy, Company Burger, 5 Guys, and Tru Burger, made the list with mention of High Hat. Freret and Oak Streets rule. Carrollton and Covington 2.
  • Maspero's on Decatur will serve you a Steakburger and you'll have fun
  • Phil's Grill in Fat City lets you build your own on paper then eat it.
  • Bud's Broiler has Bar-B-Que sauce, Chile and Cheese but I'm not impressed
  • Lee's Hamburgers cooks the onions into the burger
  • Ye Old College Inn has a hamburger steak as well as a sandwich on a bun or a double on French, but they upgraded and who knows now?
  • Ruby Red's (only on the westbank now, peanuts everywhere)
  • O'Henry's offers more peanuts but their real claim to fame is the free cheese fries if the Zephyrs score in the seventh. Get a free steak on your birthday.
  • Burger King (purists would object but it is the local favorite with the most sodium, fat and sugar. It is the most popular in New Orleans among McDonalds, Wendy's, Rally's. However among these, Wendy's square burgers are the best.)
  • Camiellia Grill
  • My daughter orders DiMartino's burgers plain (technically that would be "wit nuttin," but we may not have trained her right).
In Memoriam
  • Royal Castle (it's long gone)
  • Frostop (also long gone)
  • West End Cafe--double double poboy was over the top, claw machine too (gone)
  • Katz and Bestoff was bought out by Rite Aid
  • Eddie Price's became the Boot

White Castle. Purists. Craving a Slyder? There used to be one of these restaurants out on US90 past the Rigoletes somewhere, probably just over the state line.  If you want the real thing now you'll need to go out of town, maybe as far as Nashville, but I love that stoner movie with Harold and Kumar (and Doogie). Pick them up frozen at Winn Dixie, A&P or of course any Wal-Mart outlet.

Go ahead tell me what you think. Google around and you also find recommendations for  Mothers, GB Patio Grill, Blue Tomato, Bulls Corner, Bywater BarBQ some even claim Zea has the one, and one outfit has the chutzpah to call itself "The New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company," but I stand by my list above as the best burgers in New Orleans.

  • Krystal : Chattanooga based Krystal offers a small square burger and sells them by the sack. You'll find the city's only Krystal franchise in the 100 block of Bourbon Street.

  • Royal Castle : This Royal Castle is actually in Florida, but it looks just like the one that used to grace the corner of Carrollton and Hampson (a location now occupied by a Burger King). :: Continue reading...

  • Best Poor Boy Restaurant.
